Welcome to this last Countdown to Christmas tutorial. I really hope you have enjoyed them as much as I have. This week we wanted to show you some applique sewing techniques to help you sew the patterns from Christmas Applique and FPP.
I started with drawing out the design onto Bondaweb and pressing them onto the various fabrics.
Next I cut around each of the pieces.
A little tip to remove the paper from the back of the Bondaweb. Use a sharp pin to scratch a line through the paper. This will allow you to remove the paper without fraying the edges.
Arrange the pieces onto your background fabric, as per the pattern, and press with a hot iron.
I then used different techniques to sew each piece to my background. The beard of Santa is sewn with a straight line around close to the edge with my machine.
Next, I used a blanket stitch on my sewing machine to sew around the edge of the hat rim and the bobble on top of the hat.
I decided I wanted to show you some hand sewing as well as machine, so next I used a hand blanket stitch and a coordinating thread to sew around Santa's nose.
I hand sewed a straight stitch along the edge of the hat. I love how this gave it a slightly frayed edge, so that it looks more fluffy.
Lastly, I used my simple colonial knot to sew the eyes, and my Santa is finished. I am off to make this into a coaster with my 5" QAYG Square template.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog and our Countdown to Christmas, and that it has helped you to get into the Christmas spirit.
Happy Sewing.
Thanks
Steph
